E’ stato un vero piacere ospitare nuovamente su RKO, Tom Chapman dei New Order, apripista nel 2017 delle nostre interviste con gli Shadowparty, quando la radio era solo un progetto, oggi con noi con il nuovo progetto Sea Fever, nati dall’incontro dei New Order e la band di Johnny Marr (che non ha bisogno di presentazioni!). E’ il suono di Manchester, il passato che incontra il futuro per creare qualcosa di veramente interessante. Tom Chapman ci racconta questa nuova avventura, sperando di poterli vedere dal vivo, magari proprio qui a Bari in Puglia!
– Una nuova band mozzafiato guidata da Iwan Gronow (Haven, Johnny Marr) alla voce e alle chitarre insieme alla cantante Bethany Cassidy (Section 25), i SEA FEVER fondono elettronica intelligente con melodie classiche e chitarre suonanti, sostenute da archi altissimi ed ipnotici. Si sono formati nel 2019, la band comprende anche Tom Chapman e Phil Cunningham dei New Order – con Tom al basso, chitarre, sintetizzatori e programmazione e Phil alle chitarre. Ad alimentare i ritmi pulsanti della band c’è Elliot Barlow, che è affiancato al debutto della band dal batterista dei New Order, Stephen Morris.
Come spiega Iwan, riunirsi era inevitabile: “Volevamo lavorare l’uno con l’altro da anni, quindi quando finalmente ci siamo seduti in studio, la band sembrava riunirsi naturalmente”. – “Ci siamo sentiti davvero liberi di esplorare i tipi di musica che ci hanno sempre ispirato”, dice Tom, “abbiamo scavato nelle casse dei dischi delle nostre menti per plasmare il suono di SEA FEVER”. E che suono è. Il pop affianca malinconici accordi minori discendenti e chitarre surf. Ritmi teutonici kling e klang si fanno strada contro strati riecheggianti di malinconia e speranza. È una combinazione diversa da qualsiasi cosa tu abbia sentito prima.
La band rilascerà presto il suo long player di debutto (maggio 2021 ndr), avendo all’attivo uno spettacolo esclusivo in live streaming dal Carlton Club di Manchester. Ecco un estratto live del loro singolo d’esordio
A breathtaking new band fronted by Iwan Gronow (Haven, Johnny Marr) on vocals and guitars alongside singer Bethany Cassidy (Section 25), SEA FEVER fuses intelligent electronics with classic melodies and chiming guitars, underpinned by soaring, hypnotic strings.
Formed in 2019, the band also features New Order’s Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham –with Tom on bass, guitars, synths and programming, and Phil on guitars. Powering the band’s pulsing beats is Elliot Barlow, who is joined on the band’s debut by New Order drummer, Stephen Morris.
As Iwan explains, coming together as a unit felt inevitable: “We’d wanted to work with each other for ages, so when we finally sat down in the studio, the band just seemed to come together naturally.” “It felt like we were really free to explore the kinds of music that have always inspired us,” says Tom, “we dug right through the record crates of our minds to shape the sound of SEA FEVER.”
And what a sound it is. Upbeat pop makes waves alongside wistful descending minor chords and surf guitars. Teutonic rhythms kling and klang their way against echoing layers of melancholy and hope. It’s a combination unlike anything you’ve heard before.
